Weekly Dev Log - Hoseung Kwack, Narrative Designer

  • This Week's Meeting Summary

We decided to conduct research in order to build the conceptual framework for the game project. Since the game is themed around amortality, I felt it was important to have a narrative that aligns with this theme. Therefore, we decided to explore relevant myths and cases from both Eastern and Western cultures. The reason for this research is that it will help provide a solid foundation for character and object design that aligns with the story and central themes of the game.

  • Personal Design Progress

As part of the research mentioned in the meeting, I explored the Eastern myth of Emperor Qin Shi Huang. According to legend, he sought immortality by ordering an expedition to find the elixir of life (a non-existent plant) and reportedly took mercury pills. This obsession with the unscientific pursuit of immortality could serve as a core element for the game's narrative or object design, and the exaggerated side effects could potentially be used for enemy characters or other aspects in the game.

Additionally, the preliminary draft of the game’s narrative plot revolves around a protagonist who escapes from a research facility created by individuals desperately seeking immortality (amortality), ultimately reclaiming natural aging and death. For the game design, which is expected to follow a rogue-lite structure, I am considering two options: the protagonist could either be cursed with immortality, where they cannot die despite repeated deaths, or, upon dying, they would be reincarnated as an unknown test subject attempting another escape. I am currently deciding between these two options.
